Thank you to Lowe’s Home Improvement for sponsoring my post on 5 Ways To Update Your Laundry Room

With three kids, teenagers to my little kindergartener, I never knew how much laundry we would actually do. As the years have passed the amount of laundry has grown with our kids and the type of laundry has changed too. Before we head back to school, which also means, back to sports, I needed to upgrade my laundry room and make a space that was functional and in all honesty, fun for me to spend A LOT of time in.

5 Ways To Update Your Laundry Room

I have two kids that work out and play hockey daily plus my little girl with her ballet leotards and school uniform. Upgrading my laundry room appliances and simply creating a space that worked better for my family was a must before we headed back to school. I needed something to handle those heavy loads i.e. hockey pads to delicate uniforms or ballet tights.

After months of planning and research, I knew there were 5 ways to update your laundry room and create a space that even I want to spend time in.

1 – Upgrade Your Appliances To Better Fit Your Family Needs

After a lot of research, I was extremely excited to discover LG’s New Top Load 7300 Series! The new wash motion is incredible with the largest “tub” I have ever had or seen. A few items sold me on the 7300 series:

  1. The WT7300 Series is amazingly quieter and faster when washing
  2. I am obsessed with the TurboWash 3D Technology: You can see everything get clean with NO agitator, using a powerful jet spray and tub and a motor that works in the opposite direction.
  3. It has five variable jets for my different type of loads
  4. The LARGEST capacity top loader in its class:  5.0 CU Ft. You can fit a comforter or all those hockey pads
  5. Stainless Steel tub that creates a smooth surface that won’t snag fabrics or ruin expensive clothing
  6. Load and unload the dryer two different ways with its dual opening LG easy Load dryer door. Watch my insta-stories, love this feature
  7. Finish laundry on the go with SmartThinQ Technology – WiFi!
  8. Spend less time on laundry with more room for clothes. 7.3 cu. ft. of dryer space
  9. 9 dryer programs plus sensor that will adjust the drying time
  10. Gorgeous LED display and Dial-A-Cycle Controls

2 – Add Floor and Wall Tile: Tips for Basement Flooring too!

I knew I wanted to add an accent wall tile behind the machines. Simply to create a space that I loved to do laundry in. However, when I discovered the square 6×6 American Olean tiles at Lowe’s for ONLY $.39. I decided to extend the accent wall. I designed a full height accent wall tile behind our new LG Machines but then decided to add half-height wall tiles throughout the laundry room. I soon realized that this was not only for design but functionality.

Our laundry room gets a lot of wear and tear, even though it is in the basement we use it every day as a “mudroom” to house all the hockey equipment that is used daily. The boys literally throw their hockey gear around and the walls get damaged easily. For that reason, extending the American Olean Wall tiles, half-height, around the entire laundry room was a perfect idea.

For the same reason, I opted for black mosaic tiles on the floor. Mosaic tile sheets are easier to maintain. Our laundry room is in the basement and we have had some slight water leaks in the past. So I wanted to design the floor tiles like a shower. Literally, I designed this space as if I was designing a shower.

The tiles were laid in a slope to the drain! A GENIUS idea I might have had when I began designing this project and my husband said he would NOT allow me to tile the floors because of the water. WELL, then I am designing it like a shower.

I made sure it sloped to a drain and that it was mudded and grouted the same way as a shower. Since I was tiling the walls they would meet at the floor the same way a shower does. No need for any baseboards!! BAM!!

3 – Update Utility Sink to Vanity Sink

We have always had a utility sink and I thought that was my best and only option since it is in the basement. I was nervous to add a vanity style sink with wood cabinets underneath (remember that water issue). Well, I made sure to have the sink elevated, so technically it doesn’t even touch the ground. I loved the deepness of the sink, truly deeper than my last one and all the under sink storage for my cleaning supplies.

4 – Upgrade Sink Faucet & Hardware

The cabinet laundry room sink came with a faucet and sprayer but I wasn’t too fond of it. I found the Moen Wetherly Metierranean High Arc Faucet with sprayer feel, high arch, and overall functionality. An easy upgrade to the cabinet sink. No need to settle with the builder’s grade faucet and sprayer, upgrade to Moen Wetherly High Arc Kitchen Faucet.

5 – Add Open Shelving

Laundry rooms are known to have upper cabinets just like a kitchen. I think this is great for storage but, because of my staging work, I have seen many of these storage cabinets overflowing with, well, junk. They become a somewhere to store random stuff, out of sight out of mind, and the lose their functionality.

As part of my home renovations, I have wanted to simplify my spaces. Less is more. I have cleared out hundreds of pounds of stuff from my house the past few months. I knew if I had cabinets they would just get crammed with stuff. Like my kitchen renovation project I opted for open shelving. I knew this would make me keep the space tidy and organized.

I also wanted the look of natural wood but without the maintenance and was thrilled to find so many options of wood shelving at Lowe’s. I opted for Allen & Roth’s Wood Wall Shelf and Brackets. They come in different shades and different bracket styles, I decided to keep it a gray neutral with black brackets.
